Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a teacher at an inner-city school region with a large, diverse population of students with special needs from low-income families. The students at our school are eager learners looking to find a safe and secure place to learn. Many of our students are from immigrant families from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Honduras, and other South American countries that are faced with many challenges. Our school provides a home for a diverse and cultural community. Many of our students participate in the Head Start Program.

Our school looks to promote diversity and inclusion in a Title I school in which our students come from diverse backgrounds such as very low-income families, at many times below the poverty line.

Ninety percent of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our school is located in the heart of one of the lowest socioeconomic neighborhoods where many parents do not speak English. Within my classroom, I also have several students that are English Language Learners as well as special needs students with a variety of challenges such as ADHD and learning disabilities. These conditions can make it difficult for students to learn, and they can benefit from any aid or assistance.

My Project

Our students are living during a time when it is important for them to speak freely and express themselves. They need to understand the power in their voice that allows them to make the change that is necessary in this world. As a result, we are working in our class to create our own class presidential election. Here students will work on campaigning and speaking on the major topics within in our classroom (sanitation, curriculum, technology). In our democratic classroom, students will campaign and vote for who they feel will be the best candidate for our class.

Help us to get a printer and ink so that we can print and scan our campaign posters as students begin to rally for our class president election!

This will help our students to understand the importance of voting and the democratic process. This helps us to present our students with information on voting rights and registration as we print out our voting cards and ballots. This is a great opportunity to see the difference a student can make along with their vote! Please help us to get the necessary supplies to make this election a reality!
