My Students

Our school is in a rural remote village in the interior of Alaska. Our village is the last remaining village on the Innoko River.

Something special about our village, school and students are that we are literally the last of our tribe, the Deg Hitan.

We try to instill a sense of pride in our students about our culture and also school pride, as we are also modern that way! They really don't realize how important and unique they are.

My students live a subsistence lifestyle which means they live off the land. Our fish, moose, waterfowl and greens all come from the land around us. Our traditions, our culture and our lifestyle is a life in harmony in the world around us.

We are not rich. We know how to work. We volunteer A LOT. Our students know how to be kind, empathetic and gentle. I wish everyone could come and meet our students.

My Project

We live in a rural remote village in the western interior of Alaska. We are the last inhabited Deg Hitan (indigenous) village on the Innoko River. Once home to many thousands of people up and down the river, early gold miners and trappers brought disease and suffering, devastating entire villages.

The remaining elders would like to share their histories with the youth in our village.

We would like to invest in cameras and recorders to help document and preserve our history for the future of our tribe. Thank you much.
