Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year I am teaching Advanced Placement, Honors, College Prep Biology, and Environmental Science. I am also advising the Eco Mindfulness and Garden Clubs. My students care about the environment, gardens, and campus beautification.

My biology students need preserved rats, grasshoppers, sharp and angled scissors, and forceps for their comparative anatomy unit.

In May and June, we do a unit on physiology and anatomy. My students need the preserved specimens, such as rats, to learn about the different morphological features of various animals. We need new dissection tools, including surgical scissors, as ours are getting quite dull. Sharp tools are necessary to make correct incisions safely. We also need a class broom, Swiffer, and pads to clean up after each dissection. In each lab group, there will be a clean-up leader and that person will be responsible for tidying up their group's sink and table, which also includes the floor in their designated areas because fluids tend to get all over the floor during clean-up. This will help ensure lab safety and the students also learn about taking ownership of their learning space and being responsible.

We are getting low on pencils, fine-tip markers, and highlighters that we use daily for diagrams in our science notebooks. We will use them for our hands-on out on comparative anatomy and color coding the various body systems.

I have a lot of classroom decorations and the twinkle lights will be put up as the students find it very inviting and enjoy the atmosphere. Students tell me all the time they enjoy a space that feels cozy to learn with their peers.

Lastly, the Garden Club and Eco Mindfulness Club would like to collect and upcycle old shirts and use them for a tie-dye project to give their old clothes new life.
