My Students

I am a speech-language pathologist working in an urban school, serving students from PreK through 4th grade. All the children I work with have a variety of strengths and needs on the autism spectrum. My students are from diverse backgrounds; including rich cultures and different socioeconomic statuses.

Introducing new curriculum can be daunting, but my students are stepping up to the challenge!

My Project

The classrooms I work in are beginning to implement an evidenced based curriculum called STAR (Strategies for Teaching Based on Autism Research). One of the three components of STAR is Pivotal Response Training. Pivotal Response Training elicits language and play skill responses from kids using reinforcing and high interest materials.

The materials I am requesting will provide rich opportunities for language and play skill development, including but not limited to commenting, requesting, and sharing toys.

Because they have multiple pieces and are interactive, toys like the take apart dinosaurs and the playdough/sand theme sets will be ideal for motivating my students and facilitating multiple trials within a teaching session.

Pivotal Response Training is a behavioral method that uses naturalistic teaching strategies to teach language and play skills. The students we serve have a wide variety of interests, so having an assortment of motivating materials is crucial for success. In addition, our wider school community is becoming a STEAM magnet school next year. The chosen materials are STEAM aligned and will support the wider vision of our school.

Pivotal Response instruction typically increases motivation, decreases frustration, and is fun for both the student and instructor!
