This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year, I start a new adventure working in preschool classrooms. These preschoolers have been diagnosed with severe delays in communication. These preschoolers do not talk and/or struggle to be understood, and this impacts how they interact and play. Many need motivation to speak and alternate/augmentative means of communication like voice output devices, personalized communication boards, and sign language. They are not naturally drawn to play with others or ask for basics (e.g., drink, food, bathroom) because they do not know how. For one reason or another, their development is not typical which makes learning and learning to communicate tremendously hard for them.

These preschoolers learn to talk through novelty in play.

The tools in my cart are not typical day-to-day toys they are used to seeing. I picked items that will knock their socks off so they'll want to communicate and interact with adults and peers. I choose wigs, hats, and masks that they will be thrilled to request and use concpets like "put, on, see, more" using laminated boards with pictues of those concepts and toys to talk about it all. The sensory peanut ball and trampoline will help the little ones who have unique needs to jump and roll on a ball in order to give their bodies calming input so they don't feel frazzled and readies their bodies and minds to learn. There is a megaphone that distorts your voice, water doodle mat, and a motion sensing game to get them playing with others in small groups instead of off on their own.

Many of the items are new to students, will make it intriguing for them to participate, and will teach them the language and play they need to grow.
