Preschool Students Need Pictures For Literacy Development

My students need to expand their pre-literacy skills with the help of pictures from the Boardmaker PCS addendum libraries.

I work for one of the largest urban school districts in the nation. Everyday I go into work excited to teach 40 eager three and four-year-old children. My classroom serves a diverse number of students in terms of ability and English Language Proficiency. This is my 6th year teaching in a "blended model" program. The program's main focus is serving children who have mild to moderate developmental delays alongside typically developing peer models. I work with a co-teacher and two assistants who are fluent in Spanish. Until this year, the only language we served aside from English was Spanish. Now we have families who speak Russian and Italian at home as well. We have found that using pictures to supplement what we are teaching helps the children who are used to hearing another language or who have limited language skills due to a disability. One of our biggest tasks as preschool teachers is to build oral language skills, which is the jumping off point for reading and writing later in the preschool years and certainly in the early elementary school years. We currently use picture symbols to represent our daily schedule, to label our centers, to provide "rules" of the classroom in picture form and to enhance our teaching. My co-teacher and I have spent money from our own pockets to pay for the initial set-up of the program. Now we need the addendum libraries which have symbols that are specific to the needs of our early childhood program to enhance our teaching. I assure you that we are both dedicated to building the oral language and vocabulary skills of our children in a classroom that is rich in print.
