My Project

My students are prekindergarten students who meet the state requirements and are labeled as being "at-risk" of not succeeding; thus, they are placed in the program to help them succeed. They are four years of age and live in a medium-large city. My school follows the "Nurtured Heart" philosophy, where we work to find greatness in each child. In my classroom, I try to make each child comfortable and part of our school family. Many of our children are learning how to regulate emotions; our calm corner is in regular use, as children learn how to calm down and relax.

Temple Grandin says, "Pressure is calming to the nervous system." I did a previous project where I requested two weighted puppies (a lap pad and a shoulder pad), and these were so successful that I would like to add them to my menagerie.

This project is requesting two cats, dogs, and bears so that the children have a choice of their animal when they need a weight to calm down. In addition, last year our program gave us a weighted blanket to use at naptime with one of our students. This was so successful, that I would like additional blankets if needed for more students.

I am hoping that the addition of these calming items will help our classroom continue to be a calm and happy environment.
