I teach developmental preschool for the Seattle School DIstrict in a high poverty area. My daily goal is to maximize progress of my students with special needs through high interest, hands on activities that help them to increase skills in gross and fine motor skills, pre-literacy, math, science, music, art, and play. I utilize various curriculums including Creative Curriculum, RULER social emotional learning, role play and technology in my classroom to help students increase communication, social, early learning, self help and motor skills. Helping children learn is my passion, but our program is very much in need of funding. Please help my students to grow through your generosity!
My Project
Exposure to literature is of critical importance to language development and emerging early literacy skills in young children. My classroom library is in need of more books to create a robust thematic learning in my developmental preschool classroom.
We have many students with IEPS who qualify for specially designed instruction in the area of communication and early learning skills who need to strengthen their early literacy skills.
Our classroom has a daily book circle in which the teacher reads to the students. The students in our classroom also have free time with books in our book area during choice time. Handling books help them to develop an understanding that pictures tell a story as do the words. Presenting vocabulary thematically helps children make associations between words and scaffolds students' learning.
When children see adults excited about reading, they will catch their enthusiasm. Reading to children lets children use their imaginations to explore people, places, times, and events beyond their own experiences. Reading to children also can also introduce types of literature children may not discover on their own and supports their word learning .
Please support this very worthy project to help students from high poverty situations with special needs and some of whom are English Language Learners to benefit from wider variety of classroom literature.
