Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are working on developing social skills, language skills, early math skills, literacy, and physical development skills that will help them set the foundation to transition to kindergarten. They attend a special day class that serves children 3-5 years old with a range of eligibilities from developmental delays, autism and speech and language impairments. They come from different backgrounds and low income families.

My students have different abilities and face different challenges.

Many of my students are pre verbal and lack social interaction skills and experiences. They are eager to learn new skills and in very much need of visuals, sensory stimulating materials, manipulatives and literacy materials that will spark their interest to help them learn new skills and build on based on their abilities and interests.

My Project

This materials will enhance the library and interest areas in the classroom for my students to engage and learn. The visual timers in all three small group tables will help them transition. The math counting links will provide an interactive way to introduce numeracy concepts. They will use the printed number cards to practice number recognition. They will develop their fine motor skills and practice learning their colors as they link with their hands. The magna tile set will help reinforce their shape recognition by giving them visual, tangible shapes to explore as they count the sides on each shape. It will also help expand their vocabulary by using and visualizing comparative words as they connect "a big square" with a "small square" and use their imagination to build and connect the geometric shapes.

This project will foster social emotional development through interactions with each other as they work in small groups, learn and take pride sharing their creations.

The read along stories will build on literacy skills through singing the stories and provide a great opportunity for them to listen to the story with a partner. The letters in the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom will make learning their letters fun and provide hands on opportunities as they follow along placing the letter on the tree as the story is read to them.

The play doh will help develop their fine motor skills and provide a fun sensory experience as they feel the texture, roll, cut, learn colors, and making endless creations using their imagination. The laminating sheets will help me provide them with the daily support that they need as I create visuals to teach language and simple concepts. I laminate all kinds of pictures including daily schedules, sequencing of stories and song cards.
