Preschool Gardeners, Grow With Us!

My students need to experience all ways to learn. We study seeds and plant growth, and having a greenhouse would be a great way for them to grow vegetables and flowers.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you grew something from a tiny seed? I would love for my handicapped students to experience this not only in the Spring and Summer, but year-round. Many of my students have sensory issues and playing in the dirt is a great way to overcome these issues.

My students are from a very low socioeconomic area in West Virgina.

They are preschool children ranging in age from 3 to 6. They are also physically, mentally, visually, developmentally, and hearing challenged. Special education students when given the opportunity at such a young age make huge educational strides when given different opportunities to learn. We have kids that are autistic, have hearing and visual impairments, cerebral palsy, mental and physical delays, as well as typically developing peers. The children learn and play together all day long, and having a greenhouse is just another learning facility that will teach them so many things about plant growth and even nutrition. Being able to grow their own vegetables, fruits, and flowers will empower them not only by providing a skill they can enjoy for their entire lives, but share with their families the beauty they have created. Some lessons just keep growing and giving for a person's entire life.

My Project

I am requesting a greenhouse for the students to experience first-hand how to plant and nurture seeds to vegetables, fruits and flowers. West Virginia is one of the most obese states, and by growing and eating their own vegetables, this will enable them to try new things and learn about proper nutrition. I have already approached the local Home Depot for dirt and other supplies which they will provide free of charge. So all we need now is a greenhouse to get started. This is something that any person can learn to do regardless of their handicapping conditions. To give these children this opportunity will help them to grow socially, in confidence and build self-esteem. It will also encourage communication and vocabulary skills. This opportunity is priceless when it benefits a child, but even more so when it impacts so many children with different abilities.

Our school is located in a neighborhood that used to be vibrant with glass factories.

Since these have closed, the area has deteriorated and many are unemployed with no place to go to look for work. This project will not only have a great influence on the students, but I believe the whole community will get involved and want to help and maybe grow their own garden, or perhaps a community garden. All this could stem from special children sharing their knowledge and love of gardening.
