I have a group of very sweet 3 and 4 year old students this year who fill the room with laughter. They enjoy adult attention and like tickles and just being silly. Some of the students have difficulty with communication and some are on the autism spectrum.
While they like spending time with adults, they still need a lot of help socializing with each other.
Not all of the students in my class are able to speak yet, but they do show their personalities in other ways. When they do interact with each other, I can see a different kind of joy in their eyes than when they simply play alone. Their interactions generally occur in adult led activities so I want to provide them with more of these opportunities.
My Project
In preschool, we learn more than just our ABCs and numbers. Students with disabilities like autism and other developmental delays need all the opportunities they can get to build social skills and positive interactions with their peers. This project is designed to provide us with board games for our weekly game day that incorporates turn taking, sharing, talking to peers, and most importantly, finding the value in friendship. Desiring friendship and peer interactions is one of the most difficult things to "teach" a child. Providing fun opportunities and experiences that can bring children together with their peers is a good start to building skills that will one day lead to healthy relationships with others.
The items I am asking for are various board games for ages 3 and up with 2-4 players.
Some are the classics like candy land and chutes and ladders. The others are newer games designed for preschool aged children that work on academics, problem solving, turn-taking, and socializing. These games will be added to our game collection to be used weekly at “game day”. We will have 2 groups, one led by myself and one led by an educational assistant. My students can chose their group and game from the game collection. I currently only have a couple games because I gave away a lot to a teaching partner a few years ago who didn’t have any materials in her new classroom. The games I do have are old (mostly from goodwilI am asking for help to rebuild the collection to help my students learn and use social skills. Thank you for your consideration!
