My Students

"I've got stories to tell. I can be an author, too!" This response reflects the power of past author visits to positively impact a student's attitude towards reading and writing. Help us prepare for a visit by popular author Paul Volponi this spring.

Our middle school (grades 6-8) is located in an urban neighborhood in New York State.

Many of our students are new to the country and learning English as a second language. Over 95 percent of our students are eligible for a free lunch. While we have many students who have already discovered how reading enriches one's life and are loyal library "regulars," there are others who still haven't discovered their "home run book" that sends them returning to the stacks week after week. One subgroup that our faculty has identified as being generally averse to reading is our male population. While many boys will read nonfiction books about topics like sports and cars, teachers have a harder time finding fiction that boys can relate to and enjoy. The work of Paul Volponi has been the exception to the rule. Boys who had shown no interest in fiction have found his writing utterly engrossing. For this reason we are very excited that Mr. Volponi has reserved time in April to visit our school.

My Project

In order for the students and the author to get the most out of their time together, the kids need to be familiar with the author's books. One way we plan to use the sets of books is in English classes as part of an intensive author study. As the name implies, students will focus on the life and writing of Mr. Volponi, identifying where his real life has influenced his choice of subject matter. Students will also identify themes that are woven throughout his body of work. Most importantly, kids will have access to his work so they can generate authentic and original questions to pose to Mr.Volponi. The librarian will also use the resources to host grade-wide book clubs. These "chat 'n' chew" sessions held during lunch will introduce kids to the pleasure of sharing their reading experience with a group of literary friends. Past experience shows that they may originally come for the pizza, but they'll return for the stimulating exchange of ideas!

As a school librarian, I have witnessed how differently students approach reading and writing after meeting an author.

When they hear how many revisions writers complete, students see value in writing multiple drafts of their own work. When they hear writers explain where they get their ideas, they begin to see their own lives as a source of inspiration. When they now connect books with flesh and blood people, they read with new-found engagement the ideas between the covers.
