This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Walk into my classroom and you will find a group of lively and animated second-graders bustling with enthusiasm. Very little can hold them back on their daily journey and quest for knowledge! My class is comprised of a mixture of general and special education students who are also English language learners.

Our school is located in East Harlem and most students are socioeconomically disadvantaged.

We are one of only a handful of bilingual schools and our community is built on the belief that all students will become lifelong learners, creative thinkers, and productive citizens. This is evident the second you walk into our school building! You will see students engaging in a variety of different ways and rallying together to learn on a daily basis!

My Project

Each year parents in my school district face financial hardships and this year will be the most challenging of all. Naturally, the main parental concern will be their children's health and safety. My objective is to lift some of the burden off their shoulders by providing a safe learning environment.

I created this project to ease the financial burden parents will have when they send their children back to school, but also to provide easily sanitized materials for my students.

Many of the items listed in this project are plastic items that can be wiped down daily. Typically, in a classroom setting, school supplies are shared amongst groups of students. This school year, I want all of my students to have their own individual classroom supplies to limit the amount of contact they will have on high touch areas.

There are many important items listed in this project. Each student will receive their own seat sack to store their school items. This will limit their contact with typical organizational bins we use throughout the classroom. Students will also receive their own plastic pencil pouches to store their writing and drawing supplies. During a normal school year, items are stored in caddies on top of their tables to share amongst 5-6 students. I am also requesting whiteboards and dry erase markers and erasers, as well as plastic pouches for storage. This will help students stay organized and limit germ exposure.

This will be a year unlike any other and there is still so much uncertainty. Although it is impossible to avoid all contagions in a classroom setting, I believe with these personal tools for each student, I can limit the spread of germs and protect my students at the same time!
