Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are part of a diverse learning community in an urban area of the United States. They are labeled as Students With Disabilities and English Language Learners, but these labels do not define them. They are extremely motivated and passionate students.

They are filled with pride and joy when they succeed in school since they have often been told that they are failures.

They know that to succeed in school, and in the future, they must work hard to become better readers and writers. They show determination every day to master the skills necessary to be proficient in reading and writing. These skills will help them and their families to a higher quality of life in the future. This is the beginning of their pathway to becoming college and career ready members of society.

My Project

My students have disabilities that sometimes make writing with a pencil or a regular ink pen uncomfortable. Sometimes my students are just afraid to pick up a pencil and write. The special flair pens increase student desire to write. Using these special pens makes writing seem less scary, and the way the felt tip glides over the paper makes writing more comfortable. Best of all these pens do not smudge!

Post-it notes help struggling readers make sense of their books.

My students love to jot on post-its as they read. For students who need extra support, the tracking of books on post-it notes can help them follow the plot, track character traits, and develop ideas about the author's message or theme. Even strong readers can develop more complex ideas about reading, using quick jots to save their thoughts about what they are reading in real time.

Have you ever seen what happens to a piece of paper shoved in a middle school student's book bag? The blended learning model requires students learn at school some days, and remotely from home on others. The laminator will allow me to provide them with sturdy materials to transport to and from school. Anchor charts, checklists, and other papers they need to keep safe will be protected after laminating them.
