My Project
Receiving this grant would fund a 3d printer that allows 200 middle school science students to participate in the ‘Prehistoric Prints’ project annually. Students research the Geologic time scale, a typically dry subject for intermediate learners, and ‘adopt’ a dinosaur from the Mesozoic era. After much investigation of life during this prehistoric time, students will design and print a 3d model of one of the creatures that lived in this era. All models will be displayed as a museum exhibit outside of the classroom. Funds from this grant would be used to purchase the 3d printer and consumable filament.
This project will allow students to appreciate the vast life forms that existed long before humans inhabited the planet.
While many young learners have extensive surface facts about dinosaurs, many middle school students’ knowledge of prehistoric animals doesn’t extend much past Jurassic Park. By bringing their adopted organism to life, students will have a much deeper understanding of the animal and the environment in which it thrived more than 65 million years ago. Further, this project will allow them to participate in the design and execution of bringing their ideas on paper to fruition by creating a tangible display of learning for them to keep. Students will not only rekindle the fascination with prehistoric animals, but will also appreciate the ability to problem solve while creating a showcase piece to be shared with peers.
This project can be replicated by other educators after the teacher shares the setup, design, and final products of this project online through lesson plans, blogs, and social media postings. The project will also be shared at the local teacher center for professional development; as well as at regional conferences of educational technology.
