My Students

"Where words fail, music speaks"~ Hans Christian Anderson. Many students who struggle in academics thrive when allowed to express themselves through music.

I teach music to students in grades K-8 at a public charter school.

Our school prides itself on its commitment to the arts and sciences, areas that are neglected in many public schools. We also pride ourselves on taking an innovative approach to teaching in a diverse and quickly changing world. Our students come from diverse backgrounds in terms of ethnicity and socioeconomic status; 80% of our student population receives free or reduced cost lunch. Despite the wide variety of students, they all have one thing in common: they all benefit from the opportunity to experience musical performance first-hand.

My Project

Percussion instruments are the most accessible instruments for music students of all ages. All my students have some experience with playing in percussion ensembles, and older students are ready for more advanced studies. These instruments will allow students to deepen their musical understanding by providing them with the challenge they are ready for. Students will continue to read music, which studies suggest help improve spatial reasoning and language development. Students will also have opportunities to improvise and compose their own music. Students will participate in public performances, which will contribute to their self-confidence and self esteem.

All students need to feel successful in order to want to come to school everyday.

For some this feeling of success comes from academics or sports, but for many the arts are what they look forward to every day. Whatever inspires each individual student, studies have shown that the benefits of music education span from increased test scores to a deeper appreciation for the joy of making music.
