Pre-K STRONG All Day Long!

My Students

We are located in East New York, Brooklyn, NY. My Pre-Kindergarten students come from a variety of backgrounds, including Bangladesh, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and of course, the United States to name a few! Many students recently immigrated with their parents and English is their second language. They enjoy learning through play as we explore ten themes throughout the year. For many this is a first school experience which is both exciting and scary at the same time.

My Project

Our school has six Prekindergarten classrooms. This year our school was forced to dismantle twelve transportable classrooms, along with our school yard. This has taken away our outdoor gross muscle movement space. In order to grow big and strong, children need varied activities, which will keep their interest and build strong muscles.

Our children are very young; therefore, they need to strengthen muscles, which will allow them to independently walk and climb stairs.

The hopscotch rug will give them a space to practice their balance and hopping skills. Four year old children LOVE the success of hopping!

Additionally, the hammer and nails apparatus, actually works on two important skills: fine motor for writing and gross motor for large muscles. After being cooped up every day in our small classrooms, children need fun ways to release the pent-up energy. And when they throw the bean bags, children work on their gross motor skills. This activity also reinforces number sense, as well as letter and shape identification.

Kids love to play hopscotch and throw bean bags while they learn to identify letters, colors and numbers. They don't realize how much they learn while having so much fun.
