Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Thoreau once asked, "What's the good of a fine house if you don't have an acceptable planet to put it on?" Human beings are contaminating, consuming and destroying nature and children are being brought up in this culture. That is why, in a small way, I want to immerse my students in nature.

I teach Pre-K to 18 wonderful children in the Bronx.

Most of the children come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and many are second language learners. In our school, 100% of the students receive free lunch. We are a large, urban school in New York City and many of the children come from families who are struggling financially. Our families value education and are excited when they see their children learning and being exposed to new things. I have noticed that many students who are coming to school for the first time, do not have a lot of prior knowledge when it comes to nature. I believe it is so important to have a good preschool experience because the brain is profoundly affected by what happens in the first years of life. I want to give the children in my care all the experiences that their families may or may not be able to expose them to. I know that every day matters and that all children have tremendous promise. I want to light their fires and spark their curiosity.

My Project

Wouldn't it be great if you and I and others out there could help young children fall in love with Mother Nature? Most children I know have an instinctual devotion to animals and nature. Unfortunately, most children are gradually educated away from the deep connection to living things and the natural. All children should be taught that the world is interconnected and that all living things are part of the great circle of life as we all heard in the movie, The Lion King. Many children today, especially in urban areas, have limited contact with animals, and they struggle to develop a sense of kinship with living things. I am interested in having a Central Park Zoo based theater company come to my classroom to put on an interactive and audience participatory performance using puppetry, drama, games, and story. They provide their own sound equipment and the necessary items for the show. The children will get language development, science, theater, and one-to-one hands-on learning opportunities.

One show we will experience is called Youcan the Toucan's Rainforest Adventure.

The children will embark on an adventure that will turn them into a tropical jungle exploration team. The other show is called Petunia Penguin Goes to School. Two costume characters called Petunia Penguin and polar explorer Admiral Bird will transform my little ones into a team of Antarctic scientists going on a chilly expedition. Both of these programs will educate the children while using all five senses! Please fund us.
