My Students

Twenty young faces light up each day as they enter each Pre-K classroom, looking around in anticipation and excitedly greeting friends and teachers - "Good morning!," "Buenos dias!," "Hi!," and "I'm here!" are the familiar morning sounds.

Our Pre-K Center is an amazing new phenomenon - a free, full day, public school, part of NYC's Pre-K For All initiative.

Our Center is an entire school made up of seven Pre-K classes - all of our students are just three or four years old! The Center opened on September 9, 2015 and has become a cherished home away from home for approximately 140 eager young learners. Our students all qualify for free lunch and speak many languages at home - many are learning English for the first time. Parents and families are thrilled to be a part of the inaugural year at our dynamic, inviting public school.

My Project

Like all young learners, the students in our school learn best through real experiences and realistic materials. Photographs will open up the world around them, allowing for deeper understanding and less confusion than drawings or illustrations. Pictures of themselves and their work will allow them to build and expand upon past learning and accomplishments. Pictures of our school and community allow for meaningful lessons that heighten understanding of the key aspects of the four year old's world.

Our young students will be able to learn quickly and with less confusion due to the straightforward information that can only be provided by photographs.

Currently we have no computer or printer access and are unable to regularly utilize photographs as tools for learning. Our students will gain a sense of pride and a stronger sense of self by looking at photographs of themselves in action - whether building block structures, sorting toy bears, or using a funnel to fill a bottle with water.
