My Students

Every child has the potential to be an artist and every artist needs supplies.

Our school is in the heart of East Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY.

The school includes students from Pre-K to eighth grade, and it is a melting pot of descendants from the West Indies. The school is in a high poverty area, and about 95% of the students in the school receive free lunch. There are 18 energetic, three and four year old children in my class, but there are not a lot of funds to enrich these students' education because of the budget cuts.

My Project

I love using watercolor paints with my students and I just learned that the requested liquid water color paint is more vibrant then the traditional dry pallet kind. I can't wait for my students to experiment with it; the requested paint cups, paint brushes and water color paper will help us do that. We also need easel paper and tempera paint to use on our easel. Involving pre-K students in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skill.

Arts education has been slipping for more than three decades, the result of tight budgets, an ever-growing list of state mandates that have crammed the classroom curriculum, and a public sense that the arts are lovely but not essential.

Well it is essential in my classroom.
