Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The Cypress Hills Community School is a small, progressive public school in Brooklyn. This is one of the most economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in the city. We are a New Visions School with a combined mandate of parent involvement and a bilingual Spanish/English immersion program. I am the music teacher for kindergarten through the eighth grade and founder of our music program. I have always found a deep sense of freedom and accomplishment in musical performance, ever since I started my musical studies at age five. The public school students of our cities need to feel that they can accomplish important things beyond the narrow prescriptions of standard academic curricula. My job as the music teacher has been a wonderful opportunity for me to give my students this experience. In order to continue this experience, I would like some of my students to take part in a program called "Link Up" that Carnegie Hall offers for elementary grades, and especially for recorder students. This program consists of a concert by the St. Luke's Orchestra that includes a special educational presentation and an opportunity for the children to accompany the orchestra on their recorders. This is a wonderful program that provides extensive pre-concert preparation lessons. The pre-concert prep lessons are a great content-based curriculum in classical music appreciation, including learning about the orchestra and teaching many different focused-listening strategies that help young people to engage with classical music. Due to budget cuts our school has no financial support for our fledgling music program. From September 2001 to the present, we have been developing a small, successful program, primarily through private donations from friends and supporters. Thank you for helping me to continue this work.
