Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

With help from our incredible DonorsChoose community, we have built a "Community Collection" of instruments for students to play at home and at school. Last year, students used their Community Collection instruments to participate in virtual music lessons and work together in bands. We practiced playing chords and drum patterns; we worked together in small groups to practice our parts, and we created rehearsal videos to prepare for our virtual concerts. Students watched each other's virtual performances, cheered for one another, and voted to select the winner of our second annual (and first virtual) Battle of the Bands. Even when we couldn't play together in person, our students found ways to collaborate and perform together.

This year, students are loving the process of making music together in person.

We're preparing for a full calendar of virtual, hybrid, and outdoor performances, and we're excited to share our music with our school community.

My Project

Our new "Community Collection" instruments have opened a world of musical possibilities. During remote musical instruction last year, our students worked hard to practice, collaborate, and perform on digital platforms. Now, students create and rehearse together in the music classroom. Thanks to our "Community Collection" instruments, students play instruments when they visit the music classroom, and students can also borrow instruments to bring home, where they can continue to practice and explore on their own.

As a part of our musical learning, students are working to build self-directed, independent practice habits.

We are exploring a variety of practice strategies, and students are learning to design and select practice routines that work well for them. Practice habits are important for life-long musical learning -- but every musician is different, and we learn to practice in our own ways. Please help us to build a collection of practice tools that students can use, both in school and at home, to develop practice habits and routines. Our project includes timers for supporting practice routines, and also adapters so that students can connect their own headphones to our Community Collection electronic instruments when practicing at home.
