About My Students

Dr. Martin Luther King once said, "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education."

My students are from South Los Angeles County, the majority of them are Latinos, many are second language learners, and they attend a high school with a population of nearly 3000 students. The following students helped in writing this project: Aliana, Juan, Vicky, Tanairy, Nicole, Anthony, Crystal, and Jovany.

I am requesting 38 AP study guides, one for each student in my AP Lang class. Students will be given their own book to mark, annotate, and complete practice tests as they prep for the big exam. Students will use the study guides to help them be familiar with the testing style and format used by The College Board for the Advanced Placement test in May. My AP students are from a lower socio-economic community where most are the first in their family to graduate from high school, and most hope to go on to college.

Passing their AP exams allows them to test out of their GE courses thereby saving them both money and time once they start their college education.

This would be a huge advantage that I hope for them to earn for themselves.

In Their Own Words

The goal we are trying to accomplish is to improve our skills on answering questions similar to the Advanced Placement test we are taking in May. We plan on familiarizing ourselves with the AP exams and getting use to the types of questions that are asked. We will have more chances of passing the AP exam because of the practice and the routine that we will accomplish while studying and reading the study guides. Also, we will have better time management because we will be aware of how much time we might need to spend on the passages. We also are aware of what the questions might ask us, for example, having rhetorical terms or footnotes etc. In addition, practicing and studying these passages might also give us more confidence in knowing that we might pass the test. We can also feel more comfortable because we already know what we might come across.

We will create the most of this leadership opportunity by taking advantage of the study guides and learning how to study for the AP exam. Our class would be using these study guides every week and take a practice test. We will then go over the answers and analyze the reason for why each question has that specific answer and understanding the detractors better. We will be helping each other in groups while using the study guides and explaining our own thoughts towards the practice test.

This project is important to my community because it gives more opportunities to my peers and it will give them more chances at passing the AP Exam. Also, it will not only help with the exam but also with writing overall because of the experience that they will have for reading and reviewing how all the sentences are being written and formed. Another thing is that we are able to have a very similar reading of questions and we will be able to know how to answer these questions in the correct format. We will also be able to improve our testing skills and how we approach the question. We might also realize what we did wrong the first time and understand to not do it the second time. A problem that this project will solve is having more recognition with the test and providing more confidence for my peers to score high on the AP exams.
