Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students are always eager to know what is going to be different about today. I love that they come with natural curiosity. They are eager to share of themselves with me and with the class. Whenever we encounter a problem together, I push them to be problem solvers; to think outside the box.

In a growing student population of 1700+, my students come to this class by way of reputation.

These are the ones who don't quite fit into the more socially accepted groups like athletics and cheer squad. Or, maybe sometimes, they're looking for a place where they can safely and comfortably express themselves. The socio-economic situation is, what some may consider, a factor. The school provides free lunch for 100% of it's students. We don't believe this to be a factor. These students are quick to decide that they won't be a statistic, when they see that there is opportunity, a real chance, for them to be successful beyond high school. The upperclassmen are quick to remind the new students that maturity is not a number, it's an attitude and a choice. This is a school of fighters, looking to take advantage of any opportunity that might come their way. By keeping arts in our classrooms, we have given them a safe haven and an alternative to the activities in their neighborhoods.

My Project

The class is a MUSIC TECHNOLOGY class. But, we lack certain resources. They have limited tools to produce a live music show. They have almost no way to record and produce. The idea of this project is to provide as close to a real life experience in a working, professional studio on campus. This is, after all, one of our goals - to prepare our graduates for college and the workforce. If our school had the budget, I'm sure I could have the district build the room or make the space. Sadly, that's not the case. The second part of this project is the JamHub, which allows or our class to stay engaged during class, as well as outside of class. This is to be a practice room in class. The JamHub will allow all members of an ensemble to plug into the same device and rehearse through headphones - even a drummer with the help of an electric drum set. This also allows me to rotate core groups of musicians from practice to rehearsal, so that all students remain engaged during instruction time.

The Fine Arts are integral to the total human experience , therefore essential to the core curriculum.

By contributing to this project, you are helping to keep the arts a part of the total experience, exceeding the norm where dreams and ideas become the norm. The most exciting part of this is watching how the students develop as musicians in their own right. These young musicians will leave here with more than just book knowledge when they move to the next stages of their lives.
