Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school in the South Bronx where all of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. The students here come from a low socio-economic group and often don't have many things at home. School is the place where they are exposed to many different things. My students are very motivated to come to school and learn. They love learning new things and are always interested. They get very excited about coming to school each day.

I would love to be able to supply the students with new, exciting materials.

I am hoping to be able to expose them to new materials that will enhance their learning. Thank you so much in advance for all of your help!

My Project

Students need as much independent practice with their math skills as they can get. We will begin the day with the Calendar Math Activity Center, which sets the students up with things they need to know about the day. They will practice counting how many days we have been in school and representing that number in different ways. There will also be a problem of the day, which will get the students mathematical brains thinking and ready to go for the day. As the day goes on, students will use the Math in a Flash Discovery Cans for independent practice on things they individually need to work on. They will be able to take the cans to practice skills with after they have completed other work. The Discovery Cans will be a fun way to reinforce their math skills.

Students really love to have fun while they are learning.

Using these centers that I have picked out will give the students a chance to have fun while they are learning. My students who need more practice with sight words will be able to use the Leveled Sight-Word Practice Cards for independent practice. The Touch and Read Phonics Match will be good practice for stretching out words and students being able to hear all the sounds in each word. Both of these centers will help improve their reading levels and also their writing abilities.

As a teacher of young children, I am always looking for more ways to incorporate fun into learning. I am excited to get to introduce these new centers to my students and give them new opportunities to take control of their own learning.
