Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a high-poverty area in Southwest Florida. The area that is serviced by our school is a highly migrant area. Education is highly valued majority of my students have learned English as a second language, and often English is not spoken at home.

I have high expectations for ALL of my students.

I don't allow them, or anyone else, to make excuses for them. We work, we might cry, but we definitely get to celebrate a lot. There are many obstacles they must overcome.

Students in my class are hard workers who want to do well , but often do not have the foundational skills to be as successful as grade-level peers at other schools. We spend a lot of time celebrating their wins to keep them motivated, showing them that they are making progress towards their goal.s

My Project

My team and I spend countless hours looking for resources to give our students different ways to work with concepts we are teaching.

Productive struggle and learning to problem solve is something that my students seem to struggle with year after year.

My students need opportunities to work on problems and tasks that are engaging and fun, but at the same time help them to build important life skills including collaboration, risk taking, and perseverance.

I plan to use the STEM bundle in learning stations during science. The activity kits will provide students with hands-on experience. They will be able to explore motion with the airplane activity, and erosion with the flood kit. Allowing the students to work with their peers will help them practice how to discuss and use accountable talk, the importance of planning and trial and error.

Students still struggle with their multiplication facts when they get to 4th grade. The Math Tower game will give them an new way to practice their facts that they will actually want to use. In addition, a huge part of our year is spent learning about fractions and using them in many different ways. The fraction tiles are a great way for students to model their thinking. Unfortunately, I do not have enough sets in my classroom and would like more so that it is available for my students to use. The other resource that I would like to have in my classroom are the problem solving Math Cards. These would be used in small group learning stations to give students a chance to practice and review strategies and build on what they already know.
