My Project

Pāpale ʻĀina: Designing Hats with Hawaiian Values and Art embodies the creative integration of Hawaiian culture, nature, and personal expression. The central focus of this project is the design of hats, or "pāpale," which serve as both artistic canvases and symbols of the students’ connection to the ʻāina, the land. By weaving Hawaiian values into their designs, students are encouraged to explore and express their identity, culture, and the environment around them. The hats become a medium through which they reflect their personal stories and their relationship with the natural world, grounded in the principles of mālama ʻāina (caring for the land) and kuleana (responsibility).

The word ʻāina is central to the project, as it represents the deep connection that Native Hawaiians have to the land.

In Hawaiian culture, the land is more than just a resource; it is a living, breathing entity that nourishes and sustains life. By focusing on this theme, the project encourages students to think critically about how their art can honor the ʻāina and convey messages of sustainability, respect, and stewardship. Symbolism, such as native plants, animals, and traditional motifs, provides students with a rich palette of imagery to draw from as they design hats that not only showcase their artistic talents but also communicate the values that define their community.

Through the Pāpale ʻĀina project, students have the opportunity to share their creations with their peers, promoting cultural pride and awareness. As they exchange ideas and inspirations, they strengthen their understanding of how art can serve as a bridge between individuals, their culture, and the environment. Ultimately, the project allows students to use the requested heat press, printer with ink, and the caps to produce wearable art that serves as a personal statement of their commitment to both cultural heritage and environmental stewardship.
