My Students

My students range from grades K-4 and are of the special education population, attending a high-poverty title 1 school in North Philadelphia. While there are many obstacles in their learning journeys, they are motivated to learn! However, they lack the technology that can be incredibly helpful for accelerating their progress and moving them towards mastering current and future goals.

My students are bright, but require much personalized learning in order to reach their academic goals.

Technology in the classroom would be able to allow for more intensive learning to take place for each student. Many of my students struggle with comprehension or mastering math skills, but are very visual learners. The opportunities would be endless for how their learning could be enhanced through technology - visual reminders, virtual interactive resources, access to software adapted for special learners, and more!

My Project

As a special education teacher, I see many students with varying abilities and needs throughout each day. Because my students require a lot of one on one instructional attention, reaching each student can become difficult when groups are large or if they are working independently. Factor in testing or progress monitoring and the learning can become a tricky situation.

We need five tablets that will be able to change this and add more rigorous, independent options without my assist while I am attending to another small group or progress monitoring a student.

This would also mean less distractions so my students can focus better.

Technology is booming in education, so being a part of the movement with my special education students is a no-brainer. My students would be able to access a plethora of learning tools, software, and manipulatives, that incorporated into lessons would expand their abilities. It would be mean that we can use digital manipulatives to replace broken or missing ones in the classroom. We can go on virtual tours to supplement a topic and document the experience. Students can have their own customized digital library set through the Kindle app or we can access more stories to read as a group on their own tablets through the Kindle Whispercast option. It will also give them access to software that is proven to be effective for special education learners. Students can record, create, and access a variety of means to enhance their learning with this technology to enjoy school that much more.
