This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach an elective English course to my twelfth graders. Its focus is Afrocentric literature and writers, so we study all Black and diaspora authors throughout the academic year.
This novel will be a wonderful opportunity for my students to explore a contemporary work of fiction that focuses on issues they are familiar with, have lived through, and enjoy exploring and sharing their thoughts on.
Since the novel is not on an approved book list by the Department of Education, I have not been able to teach it in several years. In the past, I have asked my seniors to purchase the book on their own, however, since the pandemic I have not felt comfortable asking inner-city high school students to get the book on their own.
It will be a wonderful addition to our course syllabus next year!
