My Students

This will be my first year at our school, and I can't wait to meet my new class of second-graders! Students in this age group are growing into their personalities as people and as writers -- they can be opinionated, creative, shy, demonstrative. Some are focused intently on their personal interests while others are still discovering their passions. Above all though, second-graders seek to make order out of the world around them.

Students at Powe come from many backgrounds, and each child has their own unique story to tell.

I am thrilled to be working at a public school that is truly diverse and beloved by the surrounding communities.

My Project

Writing can be one of the most challenging subjects to teach, since it requires a balance of instilling structure (grammar, conventions, organization) and nurturing creativity (you never know when a student will surprise you with an idea or turn of phrase more beautiful than anything you could have predicted!).

If this project is funded, the four teachers in our grade will be able to bring the Lucy Calkins second grade Units of Study to the 80 students we serve.

We will guide students as they write personal narratives, scientific nonfiction, literary criticism, and poetry. This program seeks to empower teachers with the tools to inspire their students, and show them the power they have to change the world through the written word.
