My Students

“I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” -Maya Angelou My special education students deserve to feel strong, powerful, and respected.

My students have intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities.

Many of my students face struggles such as poverty or homelessness, but show their resilience every day. My students are gifted singers, storytellers, and dancers. They are eager to interact with their peers in meaningful ways. Our school is an arts-based magnet school, and includes a specialized program for students with special needs. The majority of students at our school receive free and reduced lunch, and some experience homelessness. All children in this K-8 school learn with and through the arts (dance, music, visual art, theater). One day each week, students have the opportunity to share their learning via arts-based performances. Every year, our special education students present a performance that shares their strengths and talents with the school.

My Project

My students will use these materials to help them create props for their variety show entitled, "Powerful: A Variety Show about Celebrating Differences and Accessing Strengths." My students have chosen all of their performance pieces, and have created some of them. My students' performance will include: an original spoken word piece about disabilities, hip-hop dancing and drumming, a movement piece to the song, "Barquito de Papel," and a performance of the song "Powerful." The fabric, origami paper, and dowels we are requesting will be used to help represent ships on the ocean in our movement piece, "Barquito de Papel." The paint and foam boards we are requesting will help us to create props and visuals for every aspect of our show. The instruments we are requesting will be used during our songs in the performance, and in our daily music therapy groups.

This project will help my students to access and practice their strengths and talents in and through the arts.

This project will also allow my students, who have difficulty fitting in with their peers, to showcase their talents and hard work to their peers, helping them to connect. Finally, this project will help my students learn and practice life skills such as teamwork, collaboration, perseverance, and discipline.
