Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are builders. They are designers, creators, and innovators. The energy and excitement pours out of my young engineers as they tackle challenges. They crave engineering projects that allow them to move from a design idea to a refined product.

I teach around ninety sixth grade students everyday.

These students come from all across the District of Columbia to attend our public charter school. To attend, students simply have to apply and win a lottery system; there is no achievement requirement. With students from every ward of the district, we have a huge range of diversity within our classrooms, including ELL (English Language Learners) and special education students. The students are enthusiastic and ready to learn. They truly enjoy hands-on science experiences, often naming them as the "high" of the day in afternoon advisory. I hope to be able to provide them with even more authentic experiences within the classroom.

My Project

With these materials, we will complete explorations into many different types of motors. After studying electricity and magnetism, students will apply what they have learned to see how the two forces interact to create motion. Rather than following a recipe and having every student make the same motor, my students will be challenged to take on the role of engineers, designing, building, testing, refining, and retesting their motors. With a wide variety of supplies, including different wires, different batteries, magnets, and other materials, students will have many design options. As students change one variable at a time, they are testing each factor to see how to create a better motor. This project will not only reinforce the connections between circuits, electric fields, magnets, and magnetic fields, but will also help my students grow more comfortable with the engineering design process.

Having these supplies will enable my students to experiment with motor design themselves, rather than just watching a demonstration or reading about motors in a book.

As they manipulate the materials themselves, they will gain a deeper understanding of the interaction between the materials and the role of each part of the motor. The hands-on experience will help solidify the concepts. The variety of supplies allows for experimentation and design improvements.
