My students need poetry, need lines like those of Sarah Kay, Amanda Lovelace, Kwame Alexander, and Shane Koyczan, that honor the complexity of experiences young people face today.

My Students

Students come into my high school English classes craving connection and compassion. Although their home situations and experiences vary greatly, what connects my classroom of readers is the desire to find themselves, to find their truth, on the pages of a good book. Books can be mirrors or windows to the stories of our world. My goal is to connect the readers in my Independent Novel Studies courses to the book they need.

There is such power in poetry.

I am hoping to build a library of verse in my classroom. My readers have fallen in love with poets like Rupi Kaur, Sarah Kay, and Shane Koyczan. I want to elevate empathy in my classroom by diversifying my classroom library to include poetry that exemplifies a wider variety of voices and experiences.

My Project

The students in my classes are excited about poetry. I cannot keep the works of Kwami Alexander and Rupi Kaur on my shelves for very long before they are checked out again. Students have been passing their books around for months and asking for more.

There is power in poetry; my students are yearning to find their lives reflected in the lines of contemporary poets.

I am hoping to add even more poetry writers to our shelves. Poetry is not written by just a bunch of dead white guys. Poetry is alive in our classroom. I want my students to find relevance, find relief, and find power in the lines of modern poetry writers.
