Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students come from socio-economically challenged homes. They bring with them their understanding of life and sometimes those experiences bring out behaviors that can be challenging…those behaviors are cries for help.
Some of my students have parents that are incarcerated.
They mimic what they see at home and often bring those experiences to school. Occasionally, they open up and share what's happening but most days I have to assume what is going on at home.
My classroom is based on active participation and by understanding their home lives I can create activities that will keep them engaged and instill a desire to learn.
My Project
I am requesting the funds needed to attend this three-day conference, given by Eric Jensen, about understanding the needs of students from poverty. Not only will I increase my knowledge about children who grow up in poverty but I will also discover how to actively engage my students.
I know life at home can affect a student’s desire to learn.
I understand that survival and family are important when growing up in poverty, so I want to better empathize with my students. I use the word ‘empathize’ rather than sympathize because I grew up in poverty. I can’t help but think if I made it out of my environment then I can help my students do the same.
With the information I gain from this workshop, I can better relate to my students and be able to plan lessons that will engage them in learning. I want them to understand that I am here to facilitate their learning and lead them to become individuals who can make positive decisions that will lead them to a better life.
