My Project

My Orchestra students come to class three days a week by grade level. The kids come from a wide variety of backgrounds, but one commonality is their love for music. We don't have desks in our Orchestra classroom--we use music stands and performance chairs for class.

I am fundraising to get a set of Aussie Chair Pouches to fit our performance chairs.

The kids will be able to keep pencils to mark their music, theory white boards, dry erase markers, rosin, and other necessary supplies right at their chair! This will maximize our rehearsal time and allow the kids to be able to easily work on theory whenever I am working with the cellos or another section of the Orchestra.

The need to use every minute of class to its fullest is important in my inner city school district. I teach at a Title 1 school where most children are underprivileged and underrepresented. They come to school already behind. I am trying to provide equity by teaching them to play violin, viola, cello, and bass, but the reality is that in the world of strings, those without private instructors fall behind. I believe in giving high quality instruction and minimizing this achievement gap, and I am constantly brainstorming to provide ways to help the children become successful musicians.
