Ceramics is an incredible art course offered at a Title I school in Phoenix.
This course is an art course focusing on how to use clay, the history and influence of ceramics, and how to use materials to create a professional product.
This course better prepares students for life by providing them with a creative area where they are free to explore their identity, skills, and individual style through a project based setting. These students are unique, kind, and respectful individuals who demonstrate perseverance on a regular basis and would benefit greatly from additional equipment.
Visual arts teaches students life skills such as giving/receiving feedback, problem-solving, thinking outside of the box, and showing determination to see a project till the end.
My Project
Bringing a ceramics program to my title one school has brought excitement and drive to my art students but there is one big aspect we are lacking, a pottery wheel. This is something that the students ask regularly about and something they see other HS ceramics classes doing but due to lack of funding we haven't had the opportunity. This pottery wheel will make the biggest difference to my ceramics kids, giving them an opportunity to learn how to throw clay which could give them the knowledge to turn a skill into a very real career choice of making and selling pottery. Without this wheel, students are not given the full ceramic experience. This gives students a real appreciation of how much skill goes into these art forms and how pursuing the arts as a career choice is a very possible route. I know having this pottery wheel and allowing students to take turns on it daily will make the BIGGEST difference in my class and bring so much excitement, skill development, and project opportunities to my very deserving students.
