Pottery Wheel Without Throwing Clay Around the Classroom!

My Project

Our 6th graders study about the world's cultures and their art. One of our books is called "A Single Shard" about Korean pottery from the 11th and 12th century. I have ALWAYS wanted to let my students try a pottery wheel, but my experience in high school was not fabulous. (The art teacher actually suggested that I take a different class as I could NOT center the clay on the wheel and consistently LAUNCHED it around the classroom!)

I just ordered one of these self-contained pottery wheel kits, and I am OBSESSED!!!

I can absolutely see my students being able to begin creating pottery and projects without making a mess. As they progress in their skills, they can remove the cover and create other art. The best part about this is it comes with an "auto-centering" device which is why I could NEVER throw pottery on a wheel!

I know that we need to have several stations around the classroom because this is going to be POPULAR!! It is also very quiet, so it could be used while I am reading aloud or the class is doing independent work. I am ordering enough of these kits to provide for our 3 sixth grade classrooms because this is TOO GOOD to not share! (We will have 3 per classroom with one to use as a teacher modeling station.)

Additionally, I have included some acrylic pens and markers that can be used to decorate the pottery and creations.
