My Students

"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." - Pablo Picasso

Our elementary school is in a large urban neighborhood near downtown Dallas with the majority of our 300 students coming from economically disadvantaged homes.

I have learned that no matter where a child is coming from, they are still a creative budding artist. My students need access to an art environment that will make them excited about coming to art class and excited about creating art.

It has been proven that children benefit from art education. The arts develop neural systems that produce a broad spectrum of benefits ranging from fine motor skills to creativity and improved emotional balance. I believe all students benefit from a strong art program.

As the art teacher I see all 300+ of our Pre-K to 5th grade students weekly. This includes students receiving special education services, students in dual language and bilingual programs, as well as students currently living in a nearby transitional living.

My Project

I am fortunate to have a kiln in my art room; the student's love the time of the year when they get to explore clay and pottery. I work at an urban school district elementary school that is 69% economically disadvantaged with some students coming from a nearby transitional living. None of that matters in the art room though, where all students can be curious and creative in a safe, structured but playful environment.

I am asking for a slab roller and clay cutter to make the clay process work smoothly and efficiently in my art classroom.

While I have a kiln, clay and glaze in the art room, I am missing two very important pieces of this process, and that is a way to portion out clay for student art projects.

Clay comes in large 50 pound blocks, and pulling pieces off by hand is not consistent, a poor use of my time, and can create pains in my hands. For example: If I need 50 clay slabs for 50 students (two classes) then my current method means staying hour after school to pull them off a large clay block by hand.

I am asking for a slab roller and clay cutter to make the clay process work smoothly and efficiently in my art classroom.

Pottery is important for children to experience. Clay has a soothing effect for children. Even the most hyperactive child becomes attentive when creating something with clay in their hands. Clay work improves creativity, motor skills, sensory development, problem solving skills and self esteem.
