"Be sure to make annotations, but do not write in your books! If you write in it, you buy it!" With limited resources, my school was lucky enough to get classroom sets of novels. However, my students are unable to do something that I stress for everything they read: annotate the text.
I teach a combination of general and Advanced Placement juniors and seniors at a high-poverty, rural high school in Kentucky.
Money is always a concern in my district, and a budget for basic classroom supplies doesn't exist. The funding that is received by teachers in my department is typically pooled and used to purchase classroom sets of novels instead of other essential materials for the department, leaving us scavenging in order to make due. My students deserve to have access to the materials they need to succeed in class, regardless of the budgets of the school or their families.
My Project
Post-It notes may seem like a simple request, but they will provide my students with an enormous advantage when attempting to read, understand, and write about lengthy works of literature. I encourage my students to have a dialogue with a text in order to better understand it and to uncover deeper meanings, but this is difficult if students cannot write in books belonging to the school. Post-It arrows provide the perfect solution. Students will be able to use the different color errors to label important use of theme, characterization, and other literary techniques that will help them understand what they read and write about it effectively.
When reading a complex text, making annotations and reading actively are essential to understanding what is being read.
When students are unable to write in the books they are reading, their learning suffers. With Post-It arrows, my students will be able to effectively read and annotate texts without damaging valuable materials.
