My Students

We are a large elementary school in Northern California. We have a very diverse population in our school. I have students whose families come from all over the world. In my class alone, we speak six different languages. What wonderful diversity! Being a transitional kindergarten class we do a lot of hands-on exploration and have a lot of firsts - first time to write our names, first time to count, first time to use scissors, first time to have any type of schooling.

My Project

It is evident that many of my TK students missed preschool last year, due to the pandemic. Academically, I am not concerned. However, socially and behaviorally, my students need more practice than ever. In order to assist them, it is important that I don’t punish them for every little incident, but rather positively reinforce appropriate behaviors.

Using positive reinforcement is also important because it is a universal principle that actually occurs quite naturally in each and every classroom (Maag, 2001).

It is important to use positive reinforcement in the classroom because a student who experiences positive reinforcement often shows a greater willingness to demonstrate positive behavior (Rumfola, 2017).

I use many positive reinforcement strategies in my classroom. The one strategy I need to revise is the use of student prizes. Traditionally, my students have received tickets for good behavior. Those tickets would be places in a class jar, and I would draw 3 names per week. Those three students would get to pick a prize. This year, however, I am finding that the students need more positive reinforcement than ever to shape their behavior. Therefore, I would like to offer more prizes for every student every week, based upon how many individual tickets they earn for good behavior. Consequently, I need to significantly add to my student prize collection. This list of items should make that happen, along with a “shoe organizer” to create a prize store where every student has the opportunity to trade his her tickets for a prize on a weekly basis. Students will also have the weekly option to save tickets to trade for bigger ticket items. I am very excited to enhance this valuable program for my students.
