I teach 8th grade in a high at-risk and low income school. I have about 35 students in each class and 8 classes total (approximately 280 kids). I would love for my students to earn rewards for good classroom behaviors and choices. These include student participation, bringing materials, outstanding grades, and positive peer interactions during collaborative activities. As 8th graders (age 13/14) they often lack the intrinsic motivation to do well in school and make good choices. Having a classroom reward program with little prizes will provide immediate reinforcement of positive behaviors at school.
It is my hope that by practicing positive behaviors students will build life long patterns to become outstanding citizens.
One example of how these items will be utilized in my classroom would apply to our school's ID requirement. We requires students to wear their ID badge on a lanyard everyday. It would be fantastic to reward students with ID on a consistent basis with a "Lanyard Pet" (mini animals on request list). My 8th graders love having lanyard pets and will work hard to earn one. A second example would be students that bring their Chromebook charged each day might earn a reward sticker to place on the cover. By your support of this activity I will have enough rewards that all students will have good choices reinforced through the whole school year.
The items being requested were chosen by my current students. As a class students had the opportunity to suggest motivational rewards. The students then voted on which items were the good reinforcement and motivators. I hope these student chosen items will help encourage the positive choices that my kids need to learn as they become productive adults.
