My Project

Family and Consumer Sciences, once known as Home Economics, now provides MORE essential skills to students than ever before. While keeping the foundation of teaching real-world life skills to students, we now also prepare them for careers and multiple roles in society. As an “FCS” teacher in toy state, I know my students have the capacity to excel, but their opportunities are limited by poverty in their homes and funding at school. Many come from single-parent households or live with elderly grandparents, and school is often the brightest light in their lives.

Despite their poverty, my students are among the most intelligent, talented and creative students anywhere, and although they do not have the resources to develop their abilities to the fullest, each day I watch them consistently do more with less, and I know their potential.

The vision boards we will make in class are a collage of pictures, phrases and words that represents what the student wants to be, do, or have in their life. The idea is, their imagination can trick the doubting, sometimes too logical, part of their brain; the part that makes them doubt themselves, and keeps them from reaching for the life they want. By creating a visual representation for themselves, it will help bring positive change in their lives. Their vision board will remind them of their goals and help attract what they desire by keeping the focus on positive thoughts and energy needed to achieve those goals.

My purpose for vision boards with my students is to allow them to set goals and create a plan for their future to help them keep moving in a positive direction for their lives. With their imagination, I really believe they can create the life they dream of living.
