Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work in a public school in the eastern part of the Bronx. The area that my school is situated in is mostly composed of a low-economic population. All of the students in my school receive free lunch. It is sad to see students whose parents are struggling with daily obstacles. I teach sixteen students every single day. I see two third-grade groups of six children in each group during the morning. After that I see four first graders on an individual basis. This year I am training to use the reading recovery method to help struggling first graders catch up to their peers. My students are considered the bottom of their class when I first pick them up for intense daily reading work. I have to move them to their grade level by the end of twenty weeks. Then I start a new cycle with the lowest first graders in the class I am working in. This year I was asked to form an enrichment program for my two third-grade groups. I decided to create literature-circle discussion groups. We read new books every few weeks. My students have high standards that they need to comply with in order to stay in my group. Every Friday we have a "chat and chew" meeting. I bring breakfast and my students learn how to discuss a good book while eating lightly (so they also learn a social skill). My students are expected to do the chapter reading at home and write in their journals every time we meet to discuss the book we read. We sit around around table with a pretty tablecloth, and it creates a nice atmosphere. I believe that students internalize new words by seeing them in context. Every week we concentrate on learning new words that we came across in our books. I think that each student needs to have his or her own dictionary and thesaurus at home in order for to do a good job on his or her homework. Many of my students do not have these resources at home. I also think that it would be a great treat for my students for them to have their own book baggie. These kinds of extras help motivate children to continue to do a great job. These baggies will also help keep their journals and books safe. Maybe the rest of the class will see that these children are benefiting from trying hard in school and they will try to do their best in class. I would also like an assessment notebook, which is a great way for me to keep records about each student. When parents come in to see me about their children, it will be a great tool to show them how their children are doing. Finally, I thought that a sticker-maker would be a great motivator for my first graders. I will create special stickers just for them when they do an excellent job. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal. I can assure you that my students will be extremely grateful to receive these supplies.
