My Students

DES serves 745 students from various backgrounds, ethnicities, and support. While our focus is on academics, we realize the importance of meeting all the needs of a child including those related to behavior and character. Our principal likes to refer to our school as the United Nations due to the number of ethnicities among our students.

All students learn as soon as they enter DES that we are a school of character and in every aspect of their day from recess to special areas, our five character traits are expected: Respect, Responsibility, Cooperation, Orderliness, and Perseverance.

Our entire school is vested in our "Character Counts" curriculum which outlines expected behaviors from the playground to the restroom. Monthly "Terrific Kid" celebrations are held with our sponsoring business partners, Kiwanis and students are recognized for character traits each month such as those mentioned above.

My Project

DES is a school where kids and character count and our focus on five principles, Respect, Responsibility, Orderliness, Perseverance, and Cooperation are the foundation of all we do. Our "DES Dollar Store" exists to allow students to earn and spend DES Dollars (paper dollars) earned by exemplifying one or more of our character traits. Students must go above and beyond to earn dollars but are then rewarded for their outstanding display of positive choices. All staff members have access to dollars, including cafeteria and custodial staff, so it's a school-wide effort. Some students even work extra hard and save up their "dollars" to purchase items they want.

The principle behind the program is to teach students that good choices and hard work pay off.

The Dollar store items start at $1 for items such as pencils, bookmarks, and notepads to $15 for bookbags, hats, and seasonal baskets. Students caught exhibiting one or more of the character traits receive "dollars" from staff members then they visit the store on their day to spend their dollars. Last year, a student decided there was a specific item he wanted at the store so he worked hard to do what was right and go above and beyond so he could earn the 10 bucks he needed for a fidgit spinner...and he did! Items like the colored pencil packs, playdough, and keychains are available if students want to save up a few "bucks" while some students can't hold on to theirs so items like bouncy balls and slap bracelets are available for less.
