My Students

My students are eager to learn! In order to better engage them and monitor their progress my co-teacher and I are implementing interactive notebooks and a writing portfolio this year.

I teach in an urban school with high poverty (90+ percent receive free/reduced lunch) and a population that includes more than 25% English Language Learners.

Most of our ELLs (English Language Learners) came to the United States as refugees from countries like Burma, Bhutan, Iraq, and Somalia. The culture of our school encourages students to be active participants in their own education. Although we have challenges to overcome, there is always a positive and open attitude toward learning in our school.

My Project

This year, we are all excited to use interactive notebooks and binders as writing portfolios, but definitely need a space in the classroom to store binders for all 90 fourth graders! We'll use the bookcase every day. It will help keep the classroom organized and keep the binders in good shape. The portfolios will allow not just the teachers but also the students to see their own progress throughout the year. We encourage students to take ownership of their own learning in order to become the best students they can be!

A bookcase may seem like a silly thing to ask for but it will really help our fourth graders.

We change classes in fourth grade and it is a bit of a challenge for 9 year olds to go from being in one room all day to carrying their supplies and notebooks from class to class. Last year, many of their binders were destroyed from being dropped one too many times. Storing the binders in the room will ensure student work survives the year so that students and teachers can see progress through the year!
