My Students

The students from my NY elementary school are from various cultures, have diverse backgrounds, and most come from lower-income families. Many are English Language Learners. They have great ideas, great enthusiasm, and a great desire to learn. They are also a creative group that is and full of questions and ideas. They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them exposure to the language and the ability to think creatively. They get so excited when they come into the Library because they love to pick out new books every week. Even those that are struggling readers delight in the idea of bringing a book home to share with their family. The books offer them the opportunity to learn the language and expand their vocabulary in a fun way. The pictures allow them to use their imagination. All encouraging them to expand their language and their minds.

My Project

The laptop will allow me to create a portable library and have the ability to checkbooks in and out for students. This will give the students access to books, bring them home, and share them with their families. Due to the COVID crisis, the students who come to school for in-person instruction cannot walk throughout the building to come into my Library. Therefore, they do not have access to books for reading time at home. Many students in our Title 1 school do not have funds to purchase their own books. So having access to our school Library is of paramount importance to these students. I have arranged to have my portable carts carried to the 3rd and 4th floors. Daily, I carry books to these carts and bring them to the children's classrooms to borrow.

Unfortunately, the school is without any laptops at this time since all were given away to the students in our community when Covid first hit last March.

Therefore, I do not have a laptop to take with me to log the books in the Destiny Computer System used in DOE schools. A paper and pencil system is time-consuming and interfering with the classroom teachers' instructional time. Having a reliable system of checking books out is even of greater importance this year since we already lost over 300 books that have never been returned last year due to Covid.
