Portable CD Players!

My students need seven portable CD players to help them read challenging audio books of high interest, yet close to their reading level.

My Students

My special needs middle school students love curling up with a good book, but it's difficult to find sophisticated books they can read independently. Recently, I was excited to inherit a set of high interest Scholastic books that even come with CDs for audio listening! Problem is: No CD players.

I teach self-contained middle school students in a high poverty school.

My students love reading, but due to their disabilities, over 90% read at a kindergarten to first grade reading level. Yet they are typical 6th graders. They can't read books geared to a 6-year-old. Audio books are one way they can read at a more challenging, engaging reading level. There are many e-books available online, but I have a perfect classroom set of Scholastic books that they love. Books on nature, gross bugs, career choices, heroes in Alaska, wonders of the world--you name it. Each book includes a CD that would enable the students to curl up on one of the pillows in our library corner and independently read. As special needs students, they often perform better with the more tactile nature of physical books. But we have no CD players and our computers don't have CD-playing ability.

My Project

I'm asking for 7 portable CD players; this would cover half of my largest class. While half reads independently via the CD player, I'd work with the other half on another activity, like working on phonics. Then we'd switch. I'm excited just thinking about it! As special needs students, my students face a host of challenges including focus and over-stimulation issues. I think it would be hugely helpful to "close out" the outside world with a headset, headphones, and their own highly-engaging book to hold and listen to. I'd have an assessment during and after each book to be sure they understand what they're reading.

Although maybe a little old-fashioned, the portable CD players are a very effective way of answering the particular needs of my students.

We already have the books, and I love their quality and high interest potential. They are written just above their reading level (Lexile score), with challenging vocabulary, and topics that appeal to curious teens. I've read a few of them aloud to the kids, and they love the books, but they're unable to read them to themselves. With a CD player that would change.
