Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Por favor ayúdenme a leer libros en mi idioma principal." If you don't understand this sentence and need translation help, you are similar to many of the students in our elementary school. As a Title 1 school with a dual language learning program, our library is in desperate need of books in Spanish. Many of our students come directly from Spanish-speaking countries and have little or no English speaking experience and limited access to educational materials. As their librarian, I want to help these kids become lifelong learners by providing them with books they can relate to, understand, and enjoy.
Our Spanish book collection for kindergarten to sixth grade students currently fit in one small bookcase, but I have open bookshelves waiting to be filled!
The colorful, interesting picture books I have selected will appeal to our earliest readers. Books for older children feature characters who look like them, who face similar challenges, and who can encourage them to find success and fulfillment. Well-translated or original works from hispanic authors inspire children with messages of hope and inclusion. I will use these books during story time and library lessons. Teachers can use them to supplement curriculum and provide individual support. Most importantly, children can take them home to enjoy.
These books will be powerful tools for students and will provide read-aloud opportunities that benefit the entire family. Even with my imperfect language skills, when I translate a book into Spanish, reluctant listeners' ears perk up and their eyes glisten with excitement. The first step in helping a child love to read is to provide them with books they WANT to read. "Por favor ayúdenme a leer libros en mi idioma principal."
