My Students

"Mrs. Cain, do you have any good books?" As a teacher, I am known as someone who loves reading. In 7th grade, many students read The Hunger Games in my class; however, they are unsure where to go after that. As 8th grade students, I want them to enjoy reading NEW books that aren't movies yet!

A lot of my students come from families that don't have a lot of money.

Therefore, these students aren't used to having new, popular books to read. They can go to the library; however, those books are often checked out. It is important for these students to feel important, and getting new books would make them feel incredibly special. These students love praise. They love projects. They love hands-on learning. They love learning in ways that are different, because these students aren't typical students who can sit in a classroom and absorb the knowledge. They need different, creative ways to learn and gain knowledge to use in their futures.

My Project

This project is for literature circle books. Ultimately, I would love to create a literature circle project in which students are able to read new, popular books from the dystopian genre. This genre is currently popular and many books are becoming films from them. With literature circles, students are able to have the freedom to choose a book that they want to read and then work with a classmate to present the books. What a great way to encourage reading -- find popular, current books and have students creatively present them to the class so that classmates become interested in new books! Many students claim that they don't like to read; however, they get hooked on books that are popular! I want to prove them wrong and tell them that they love to read!

These students need to know that people are rooting for them and their education.

Knowing that people care for them and will donate NEW materials for them to use means the world to them. Students treat things better; they feel important. They are willing to work and do their best when they know that others care for them. These students are great kids -- a lot of them come from situations that may not be pleasant. It would be great for them to all feel loved!
