My Students

Thomas Merton once wrote that, "Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time." Merton shows that art can capture the soul and evoke strong feelings that live within these are the feelings I want to ignite within my students as they learn about new topics.

Although my students attend a Title One school, they love working together--discussing new topics, making connections between what they're learning and the real-world, and creating projects together.

There is a lot of diversity within the school and many opportunities to learn from one another. My students range in abilities and languages spoken. They are diverse learners who need a variety of teaching strategies to help them learn.

My Project

My students are phenomenal artists. They can imagine, create, and construct beautiful pieces of artwork. While there are a variety of levels within the classroom, I want to build upon their strengths--to empower students through art! One of my favorite professional development sessions incorporated art, reading, writing, and podcasts. Using science and social studies, students would research a topic. They would gather and organize notes, draft paragraphs, and bring their pieces through the writing process. Once the students publish their pieces, they begin the podcast process using the MacBook Pro and the Snowball microphone. When the audio for the podcast is complete, students draw illustrations, diagrams, and sketches to incorporate into the podcast. The final products will be visual podcasts that include the students reading their writing as their art pieces coincide with the details of their essays! The final podcast will be shared with family and friends digitally using QR codes!

This project will improve my classroom in so many ways, my students will show ownership and pride when writing and designing their 21st century presentations.

They can use their own sense of style and creativity, while building their literacy skills and learning about new topics in science and social studies.
